Who actually owns Vax

Vax was founded in Redditch in 1977 by Alan Brazier, launching its first product, the "orange tub" multi-functional floor-care machine, in 1979. The company still designs, tests and partly manufactures from sites in Birmingham and Hampton Lovett near Droitwich, and employs over 400 staff across the UK today.

What's changed is ownership. Since 1999, Vax has belonged to TTI (Techtronic Industries), a Hong Kong-listed group whose other brands include Ryobi, AEG and Dirt Devil. Vax's own marketing leans heavily on its British founding story without mentioning current ownership, which is fair enough commercially, but worth knowing before you buy.

Vax vs Shark: what's actually different

Both brands sell lightweight, portable cordless vacuums without a mains cable, and both compete hard on price against Dyson. Where they've genuinely split: independent side-by-side testing of flagship cordless stick models has generally found Shark's runtime ahead of Vax's equivalent, in some cases by a wide margin.

Vax's stronger ground is carpet washers and spot cleaners, a category it has built a long track record in, and where this page's SpotWash Duo pick sits. There's also a less flattering piece of shared history worth knowing: in 2010, Dyson sued Vax over its Mach Zen vacuum's design, claiming it copied Dyson's registered Dual Cyclone look. Vax won, both at the High Court and on appeal - the judges found the Mach Zen's "rugged, angular and industrial" design created a genuinely different overall impression from Dyson's "smooth, curving and elegant" one.

Neither brand wins outright. If cordless runtime on a stick vacuum is your priority, the evidence favours Shark; if you're after a carpet washer or spot cleaner specifically, Vax has the longer pedigree.

Common Vax problems, and what causes them

Recurring patterns in customer reviews across Vax's range: motor failures, sometimes shortly after purchase; cordless models occasionally picking up debris and spitting it straight back out, usually traced to a blocked filter or airflow obstruction; and hoses coming loose at their fitting over time. That's the pattern reviewers describe, not a measured failure rate, and it sits roughly in line with complaints levelled at most vacuum brands at this price point. Reviews are mixed overall, with plenty of satisfied long-term owners alongside the complaints.

Vax warranty in the UK: it depends which product

There's no single Vax warranty figure - it varies by model. Some products carry a standard 1-year guarantee, others step up to 2 or 3 years, and Vax advertises up to 6 years on selected models, but only if you register the product within 3 months of purchase. Skip registration on one of those models and you fall back to the shorter standard term.

Always check the guarantee line on the specific Amazon listing before buying - it genuinely differs product to product, and Vax's own marketing sometimes leads with the longest figure available across the whole range rather than the one that applies to the model you're looking at.

When Vax prices actually drop

Vax runs a near-permanent "sale" section on its own site, on top of the usual Amazon voucher mechanics. The genuine price floors still cluster at the big UK shopping events.

Black Friday has reportedly taken Vax's range down 25-60% depending on the model, with Boxing Day and January carrying similar depth on carpet washers and cordless uprights. If today's price on this page isn't close to that territory, the calendar says wait.
